When people ask me what music I listen to, I usually say the artists that people will probably know, such as the Beatles and Oasis.
Today, I want to introduce some other artists that I often listen to. You may know some of these, but I’m sure you won’t know them all.
Andrea Bocelli
Although many people will know Andrea Bocelli, I want to include him here for anyone who hasn’t listened to him.
Andrea Bocelli is an Italian pop classical singer. One of his songs, ‘Con Te Partiro (Time To Say Goodbye)’ has been quite popular recently because it was in the Japanese film ‘Amalfi’, sung by Sarah Brightman.
The song below is ‘En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor’.
Norah Jones
Like Andrea Bocelli, Norah Jones is famous in Japan, but again, if you’ve never listened to her, it’s time to start.
This is one of my favourites, ‘Sunrise’.
Movits
Movits is a Swedish hip-hop swing jazz band. I first saw them on the US TV show, The Colbert Report.
Their rhythms, melodies and riffs are cool (even though I have no idea what they’re singing about). They’re so cool that I bought a tenor sax after listening to Movits.
Here’s ‘Fel Del Av Garden’. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it.
Gregorian
Gregorian is a simple idea - popular rock and pop songs sung in the style of Gregorian monks over ambient music. It’s very relaxing music.
This one is ‘Angels‘, originally sung by the British pop singer Robbie Williams.
Take That
When I was in university, we thought of Take That as a bit of a joke - just another manufactured boy band (like SMAP or Arashi in Japan). Ten years after they split up, they re-formed and made a new album, and I must admit that I like it. The group is now one of the most popular groups in Britain.
This link will take you to the video of ‘Shine‘. It’s a good, fun song.
Below is another song from Take That’s comeback album. It’s called ‘Patience’. Enjoy.
Celtas Cortos
Celtas Cortos is a Spanish band that plays Celtic-style rock music. When I studied in Spain, 15 years ago, I was lucky to see Celtas Cortos perform live for the people of Valencia during the March festival, ‘Fallas‘. They were fantastic.
This is one of my favourites, ‘Cuentame Un Cuento’ (Tell Me a Story).
Duffy
Duffy sounds like she’s in the 1960s, and that’s cool. One other cool thing about Duffy is the name of her first album. She named it ‘Rockferry’ because her grandmother lives in a place near Liverpool called ‘Rock Ferry‘. What’s cool about that? Well, my grandmother lives there too!
Here’s a nice song called ‘Warwick Avenue’.
Arctic Monkeys
Arctic Monkeys became huge in Britain a few years ago, largely thanks to YouTube and MySpace (and of course there great pop-rock music). They’ve now released three albums, which, in my opinion, have gone from ‘fantastic’ to ‘pretty good’ to ‘hmmm…’
This link will take you to an interesting video for the song ‘Leave Before The Lights Come On‘.
Here’s the band in their original, noisy rock’n'roll form.
The Fratellis
The Fratellis is a good old-fashioned three-piece pub-rock band from Scotland. This music is great to sing and dance to.
This one is probably the band’s most famous and most popular song, ‘Chelsea Dagger’. Enjoy.
The Pogues
The Pogues has been one of my favourite bands since I was at school, and I still listen to them at a lot. The music has so much energy and life, and it’s all real music. The Pogues is a big band, playing (mostly) Irish music, with real instruments. Interestingly, the singer and main song writer, Shane MacGowan, is a drunk and he’s lucky to be alive after being told many times by doctors that he was going to die soon. In 1991, after falling off a train in Osaka, the band actually fired Shane, but now he’s back and the Pogues are playing together again.
Although this song is less Irish than most of their music, I think ‘Fiesta’ gives you a good idea of the energy and musicianship of the Pogues. Enjoy.

Of course, I did several times.
