In response to another question from sunny, here’s how to use ‘claim’ correctly.
- Mistake: I’ll claim about the noise.
- Good: I’ll complain about the noise.
The word ‘claim’ has a few meanings, but none of them are ‘complain’.
‘Claim’ is usually used to:
- say that something is true.
- e.g. I thought Bob was late for work today, but he claims he was on time.
- say that something is yours.
- e.g. I won the lottery. I’m going to go and claim my winnings tomorrow.
- apply for something.
- e.g. My car was stolen, so I claimed the insurance.

Ｃlaim ; ～を要求する、請求する、～であると主張する・・・etc.
- 誤った使い方； I’ll claim about the noise.
「その騒音を要求してやるわ！」 - 正しいのは； I’ll complain about the noise.
「騒音について文句（クレーム）を言ってやるわ！」
そう、‘claim’にはいくつかの意味がありますが、日本語の「クレーム」のような、’complain’の意味は無いのです。
‘claim’は以下のように使われます。
- ・正しいと思われることを主張するとき
- 例・・・I thought Bob was late for work today, but he claims he was on time.
「今日、ボブは遅刻したと私は思ったけど、彼は間に合ったと言っている。」 - ・誰かのものである何かを自分のものとして要求するとき
- 例・・・I won the lottery. I’m going to go and claim my winnings tomorrow.
「宝くじに当選しました！明日行って換金してきますね。」 - ・当然の権利として何かを請求するとき
- 例・・・My car was stolen, so I claimed the insurance.
「車が盗まれたので、その保険を適用してもらった。」
